Canaima
Canaima
is the central hub for tours and excursions to Angel Falls and the
Kamarata Valley. The tourist camp was the idea of one of Jimmy Angel's
best friends, Charlie Baughan, one of the region's most interesting
historical characters. He chose his spot well.
The camp is situated on the shores of a beautiful palm-fringed lake
with exquisite falls in the foreground, while tepuis tower in the
distance.
Most
people use Canaima as their starting point for Angel Falls, but
there are numerous falls nearby, including the Salto Sapo, where
you can walk behind the curtain, and Salto Yuri. Tour operators
abound. At the last count there were at least ten.
A Pemon community lives near to the tourist camp and they sell arts
and crafts. There are two overpriced shops in the area. There are
now telephones and faxes, but no banks. Most tour operators will
change money or cash travellers' cheques. It's best to come prepared.
